Our History

Founded by Harry Barclay Snr in 1987, and currently led by his son, Harry J. Barclay, Netherton quickly established itself as a prominent player in agricultural equipment sales and services in Angus and Aberdeenshire before branching out into Perthshire and Fife.

Our History

1987 - Netherton is born

Netherton Tractors Limited came into being in 1987 under the leadership of Harry Barclay Snr, father of the current Managing Director Harry J. Barclay. Based at the original Aberlemno site it quickly became one of Scotland’s leading agricultural agencies for equipment sales and services, operating in Angus and Kincardine.

1995 - Move to Finavon

Having outgrown the site at Aberlemno, the company moved to a custom-built dealership on the old Tollmuir sawmill 1.75-hectare site next to the A90 dual carriageway, the main east coast route from Perth via Dundee to Aberdeen. The site has three main adjoining buildings, each measuring 43m by 18m containing workshop, parts department, fabrication/blacksmith shop, sales and administration offices, display area and covered storage. There is ample outside storage at both the front and the rear of the buildings with vehicle access around the buildings and loading bays at the rear for 40ft artics and droptail lorries

1995 - Move to Finavon

2008 - Expansion into Fife

Netherton Tractors was awarded the John Deere franchise for the Fife area in 2008.  A temporary base was used until the purpose built premises was completed in 2011 at the Southfield Industrial Estate in Glenrothes, officially opening in 2012.

2012 - 25 Years in business

Netherton Tractor celebrated 25 years in business and continuing association with John Deere.  Seven of the current employees were working for Netherton Tractors on the opening day in 1987.

2013 - Glenrothes branch opens

September 2013 saw a visit to our Glenrothes site from senior John Deere management and a selection of customers.

2020 - New depots in Turriff and Nairn

Netherton Tractors Ltd established a new agricultural and homeowner equipment outlet in the Perth and Kinross area. As of November 1, 2020, the dealership also operates from two new outlets in Turriff, Aberdeenshire and Nairn, Highland. This brings the total number of Netherton group branches to five, including the two established businesses at Forfar in Angus and Glenrothes in Fife.

2022 - Long Service Medals

In our 35th year, November saw us celebrate after Lord Dalhousie presented Royal Highland Agricultural Society Long Service Medals to 6 of our employees, who have a combined service time of 247 years!
